Pohnpei’s crown jewel is its population of majestic reef mantas, regularly seen gliding gracefully through the waters at the famous Manta Road dive site. Among them, lucky divers may spot the elusive black manta—an ultra-rare genetic variation that makes every encounter feel like a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
But the marine magic doesn’t stop there. Pohnpei’s nutrient-rich waters attract schools of barracuda, solitary tuna, wahoo, jacks, and even eagle rays and stingrays. White-tip and grey reef sharks patrol the outer reef, while vibrant coral heads provide shelter for moray eels, colorful angelfish, neon damselfish, and triggerfish. With depths from 25m up to 16m, this site offers incredible up-close encounters—especially when the current is pumping and mantas pause midwater just meters from your mask.
This outer reef site is a vertical dream. Starting from a shallow 10m shelf, the wall plunges into the blue and bursts with life—massive coral heads, vibrant gorgonians, and reef fish galore. At the bend in the reef, expect thrilling action as barracuda, reef sharks, and fusiliers swirl in the nutrient-rich currents.
An underwater causeway links two reef sections in this unique dive. Schools of jacks and barracuda gather above a rocky, seagrass-covered bottom that hosts moray eels, nesting triggerfish, and bumphead parrotfish. With its dramatic topography and biodiversity, this site is a photographer’s paradise.
Pohnpei International Airport (PNI) is served by United Airlines’ famous Island Hopper route between Guam (GUM) and Honolulu (HNL). Flights do not operate daily in both directions, so be sure to double-check schedules when planning your island getaway.
